Volunteer with Children in Córdoba
A testimony from Krista Erdahl – April, 2009
I came to Cordoba not knowing anyone and with no idea what to expect. I ended up having an amazing experience. I made friends with all of the kids at “Caritas Felices”, and I got to live with and make friends with incredible people from around the world. Even though there were some days that were incredibly difficult, I wouldn’t change any of it.
Aunque el comedor “Caritas Felices, donde trabajé, es un lugar donde los niños comen, el trabajo más importante para los voluntarios es brindarles atención, jugar y charlar con ellos, de sus vida y de la propia. Cuando es posible también es importante ayudarlos con las tareas de la escuela o enseñarles un poco de inglés. Si se sabe español es más fácil charlar con los niños pero aun los voluntarios que no hablan mucho español pueden jugar con ellos y enseñarles algo.
Lo más importante es ser flexible, porque hay poca organización y todo depende de las ganas de cada voluntario. Entre las actividades que realizamos había muchos proyectos de arte, títeres, pintura. Casi siempre funcionan muy bien. A veces faltan materiales, pero se puede realizar casi cualquier actividad con algunos cambios y creatividad en cuanto a “cómo se hace”.

Este año el 25 de mayo (Dia de la Patria en Argentina) se celebró con un evento de intercambio cultural en Villa la Tela donde los voluntarios de la fundación AFOS compartieron distintas experiencias con las personas que viven esta comunidad.
Encuentro Cultural “Sin Fronteras” se denominó este evento en el que la comida típica fue protagonista a través de un locro comunitario que se cocinó entre todos. Siendo parte de la cultura popular, esta comida estimuló a vecinos, referentes del lugar y personas externas a participar de la actividad, puesto que permitiría la integración de toda la comunidad de Villa La Tela.
Se llevaron a cabo también bailes culturales representativos de Argentina como el folklore y el tango. Fue un modo de comunicación en donde la intención de compartir y resaltar la tradición hizo activa la participación, iniciando un proceso en el cual hubo reconocimiento del evento como medio integrador de la comunidad y con los voluntarios de AFOS.

Nueva casa para voluntarios y sede de la Fundación Desde agosto de 2008 AFOS cuenta con una nueva casa para alojar a sus voluntarios, mucho más grande y confortable que nuestra residencia anterior. En esta edición conoceremos la experiencia de Ricardo Guido de Italia en su iniciativa de Cine Callejero en Villa La Tela, informamos sobre los nuevos cursos de español para extranjeros que brinda la Fundación y te invitamos a participar de la primera encuesta de relevamiento para ex voluntarios y pasantes. Street Cinema in Villa La Tela The weekly “street cinema” project in Villa la Tela started as a kind of “indirect social alphabetisation” due to the difficulty of the achievement and maintenance of the interest and concentration level of the kids (or general public) during the activities. Being a visual communication graduate my plan was to use the visual channel (in this case the cinema) to show the values and problems the kids face and deal with every day. In the movies the characters fall in love, found great friendships, they fight or are scared, they do things they regret or are proud of exactly in the same way happens to us (audience) in our real lives. The purpose of the project was to strengthen the self-confident of the kids under the concept “it could happen to everyone” which is not a specific characteristic of the community they live in. New Spanish for Foreigns courses at AFOS We have just started offering Spanish Courses designed to enable students to immerse in the Argentine culture and to confidently involve themselves in any Spanish-speaking society. The classes start every Monday throughout the year. Courses are taught by native teachers highly experienced at all levels (basic, intermediate and advanced). It´s not required to be a volunteer, you can apply to the Spanish courses independently. Due to our non-profit orientation, Argentina's favorable currency exchange rate for foreigners and Córdoba/s lower cost of living, we can offer our programs at very accessible price. Please consider that by learning Spanish with Fundación AFOS you are also helping to finance our organization costs as well as the work of the non profit social organizations that we support. The cinema was built up every Wednesday night tying the screen on lampposts at the beginning and after we obtain a tripod we could use the screen in places where there were not posts or trees available. For the screen we used a white plastic fabric so it could be seen from both sides, the Asamblea los Boulvares (another organisation we worked for) gave us their availability to using their projector and for the sound system we asked one of the Mirta’s son (one of the woman we worked with in Villa la Tela) who is a DJ/party planner.
